Comments - Handsome triptych from the Sino-Japanese War of Meiji troops engaging the enemy during the Battle of Pyongyang. In the center, an officer on horseback thrusts his sword ahead to signal the attack. Below him, rows of gunners fire onto the Chinese solders, who turn to flee amidst the clouds of smoke and dust. A fallen enemy lies on the ground at right, his weapons beside him. At left, more Japanese men wait beneath the rugged branches of a pine tree. The wall of a fortress stretches across the horizon in the distance. A great composition, nicely detailed with burnishing in the black uniforms and soft bokashi shading in the clouds and sky.
