Series; Edo Customs of the Twelve Months
Seventh Month: Tanabata Festival - Attractive Chikanobu design from his triptych series depicting the seasonal entertainments of upper-class ladies in Edo throughout the year. In this subject, women enjoy a walk during the Tanabata Festival, the banners seen flying high over Edo in the background. At right, a young girl reaches forward eagerly for a bowl held out by a street vendor in a tie-dyed kimono. In the center, a young boy carrying a parcel wrapped in green cloth around his shoulders stops to wave at a small dog following along at his feet. Behind them, a nobleman's procession crosses the square. A charming design, beautifully detailed.
