The Subscription List, 1884

Comments - Lively scene from the famous kabuki play "The Subscription List" (Kanjincho). Yoshitsune and his men, including his loyal retainer Benkei, have disguised themselves as monks to sneak cross the border. The aristocrat Togashi, shown here in a blue kamishimo patterned with cranes, is charged with intercepting the party. However, Togashi is suspicious of the young porter at left, who resembles Yoshitsune (and actually is). To prove otherwise, Benkei angrily abuses him. Benkei stares ahead with a grim expression, the fake subscription list in one hand and a string of prayer beads in the other. Yoshitsune cowers meekly behind his hat. Nice expressive figures set off by a large pine tree in the background framing a deep red sky. Includes embossing in the white hair and beard of the priest at left, and burnishing in Togashi's black court cap.
