Courtesan Entertaining Guests, 1853

Comments - Interesting scene of a courtesan entertaining guests in private quarters. A nobleman sits on a bed at right, a heavy robe draped over his shoulders. He looks at the beauty with a sad frown as she hands him a slender pipe. She kneels beside a kettle on a brazier, a worried expression on her face as she looks back. At left, another man sits on a bed, scowling unhappily. The samurai at his side looks up with a grin, a folding fan in his hand and an elegant tobacco set on the floor nearby. Each bed is surrounded by folding screens for privacy, the panels at right depicting a mountain landscape while those at left are decorated with large peony blossoms. An intriguing subject with expressive figures and a nicely detailed setting. Includes embossing on the beauty's white kimono collar.
