Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Sino-Japanese War Battle, 1894

Comments - Striking depiction of a battle from the Sino-Japanese War as troops clash on a battlefield obscuring by clouds of smoke and dust. Shots streak across the sky as an officer in a black jacket at right grabs the pole arm of an enemy, pulling him backwards. Two other Chinese tumble to the ground at left, one losing his cap. Japanese soldiers rush forward at right beneath a fluttering national flag, while the Chinese do the same at left, enemies firing on the attackers. A dramatic image filled with energy and action, detailed with burnishing in the black jacket and soft bokashi shading in the sky.
