The Great Battle of Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin and Their Retainers at Kawanakajima, circa 1845

Comments - Dramatic depiction from the Battle of Kawanakajima of Uesugi Kenshin on horseback charging into Takeda Shingen's encampment. The attacker gallops ahead on a dappled horse, gripping his sword above his head as his horse tramples over several samurai. Shingen is seated on a stool at left, wearing flowing red monk's robes over his armor and a horned battle helmet topped with a demon's head and a shaggy white wig. His retainers rush to defend, wielding swords and spears. Standards flutter overhead at left, above cloth tent walls bearing the four-diamond crest of the Takeda Clan. The swirling blue water of the river above provides an attractive contrast to the action scene below. A handsome design with expressive figures and wonderful detail in the armor and weapons. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
