Beauty Pleading with a Samurai, 1899

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of a beauty on a verandah pleading with a samurai. She leans forward, holding one hand to her chest and the other out behind her, a sober expression on her face. The warrior waves a sword at her, grimacing unhappily. He wears a re kamishimo patterned with a dragon and clouds over a black kimono edged with a yellow geometric print. The beauty wears a red floral kimono, her hair adorned with clusters of tiny blue blossoms. A koto rests on the floor nearby, and purple draperies frame a view of the water beyond with low mountains on the horizon. Nice large figures with vibrant color.

Artist - Kunisada III (1848 - 1920)

Image Size - 14" x 28 1/4" + margins as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Three panels, not attached at the seams. Large tear along left edge of right panel, a few tears at edges, repaired, blends well. Creasing, slight soiling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
