Otomo no Sukune Kanemichi Killing Otomo no Matori On Behalf of the 39th Emperor Tenji to Avenge His Father, 1854

Comments - Incredible depiction of Otomo no Sukune Kanemichi galloping into battle on a dappled horse at right, gripping his sword above his head with both hands as he aims for his enemy, Otomo no Sukune Kanemichi, to avenge the death of his father. In the center, the crazed-looking Kanemichi lifts a horse above his shoulders as he stands atop a pile of fallen warriors, the horse's hapless rider tumbling through the air at left amidst broken weapons. Kanemichi's long hair flows wildly around his head, his eyes glaring and his gray and white kimono fluttering around him. Note that Emperor Tenji was actually the 38th emperor, not the 39th and listed in the title. At left, a horse rears on its hind legs, trampling the men sprawling on the ground. A fantastic action scene with wonderful color and detail, and a handsome landscape setting.
