Series; A Short Illustrated History of Great Japan (Dai nihon shiryaku zue)

Empress Jingu Lands in Korea, 1879 - Fantastic triptych from Yoshitoshi's series of ten prints depicting famous stories and events from the history of Japan. The scene is presented as part of a scroll unrolling from left to right. Empress Jingu is shown setting foot on the shore of Korea, accompanied by her elderly Grand Minister, Takenouchi no Sukune, and several retainers. After her husband's death, Jingu assumed power and led a victorious invasion of Korea. A dramatic image with waves crashing on the rocky shore and the Empress standing triumphant, pointing with her bow. A wonderful design from this unusual series.
