Katsuyori Meets his Death in the Battle of Mt. Temmoku, 1865

Comments - Gruesome scene of the aftermath of the Battle of Mt. Temmoku. After burning his own residence, Shinpu Castle, Takeda Katsuyori and his followers fled into the mountains. They sought safety at the Takeda fortress of Iwadono, but were refused, so he committed suicide. In the center, a samurai carries a decapitated head by the hair as his fellow warrior points and look across a narrow stream at two bodies lying in the grass. One has been felled by an arrow to the chest; the other is a victim of his own hand, his severed head next to the bloody knife still clutched in his lifeless hand. Another warrior commits suicide at bottom center, a sword at his neck and his face grimacing at the pain, his armor on the ground behind him. A fellow samurai falls on his own sword at right, the blade piercing through the back of his open mouth. A procession of battle flags and personal standards moves off across the plain in the distance. An expressive image with Yoshitoshi's characteristic attention to detail. Would make an unusual addition to a samurai collection.
