Harunobu (1724 - 1770) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Osen Eloping with Her Lover

Publisher - Adachi from a rare series of Edo masterwork designs. Adachi publisher seal in margin or on reverse.

Adachi was one of the most respected publishers of the 20th century. Their woodblocks were printed to the highest standards with excellent color and fine detail. Founded in 1925, Adachi also chose interesting and varied subjects for their prints and was the only publisher of many famous old ukiyo-e images.

Comments - Osen, the daughter of a teahouse owner, was a famous Edo beauty in the 18th century. Here she is seen running away from her home, carried on her lover’s back as the pair elopes. They hurry through the tall grasses along the edge of a river bank, the night sky pitch black. Above the couple in the distance, an unusual scene shows several magic foxes dressed in kimono near the torii gate of a temple. Three of them are using their tails as torches, having lit them on fire! A handsome design, beautifully printed with delicate embossing in the man's pale green under robe and fine line work. An unusual full oban size reprint.

Artist - Harunobu (1724 - 1770)
