Evening Plum Blossoms, 1858

Comments - Beautiful kabuki scene of three actors under a plum tree at night from the play "Yanagishima uwasa no nishiki-e." The fellow at left frowns unhappily as he looks back at his companion, a green robe draped over the shoulder of his striped kimono. The beauty smiles at him happily, wearing a gray coat over a black print kimono edge with a red tie-dyed collar. The man at right grins happily as he looks up at the ancient plum tree, silhouetted in black against the evening sky and dotted with white blossoms and buds. From left, the actors are Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Kanae Kingoro, Onoe Kikugoro IV as Gaku no Kosan, and Nakamura Shikan IV. An attractive design with nice calligraphic line work in the tree branches and a dusting of mica on the trunk.

Artist - Shunpusha (active circa 1850s)

Image Size - 13 5/8" x 28 5/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. Right panel backed with thin paper, left and center panels partially backed. A few small holes, repaired, blends well. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
