Series; Famous Places in Edo

Scenery of Namiyoke in Tsukiji, 1864 - Beautiful triptych of a Prince Genji and a group of beauties enjoying an afternoon on a verandah, with a beautiful view overlooking the shore at Tsukiji in Edo. The young nobleman relaxes with a pipe a right, a sumptuous banquet spread out on the floor before him. In the center, two beauties look out over the water, one gesturing at the busy harbor filled with boats of all sizes. At left, a woman tunes her shamisen as her companion whispers to her behind her kimono sleeve. Paper lanterns decorated with symbols hang overhead, nicely framing the scene beyond. Wonderful detail in the elegant clothing and household furnishings, with soft shading in the water and sky. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. A lovely Edo era design.
