The Shitenno Battling Kidomaru, 1861

Comments - Fantastic scene of Minamoto no Yorimitsu's (Raiko's) four loyal retainers, called the shitenno, battling with the notorious bandit Kidomaru, who had been waiting in ambush on the Ichihara Moor in Tamba Province. The young wild man has been laying in wait to attack Raiko when he passed. The enormous strongman rushes forward brandishing a sword above his head, his eyes bulging and his long hair flowing wildly around his head. One of Raiko's men tackles him from behind, grabbing hold of his leg, as the two warriors at left face the enraged enemy, spreading their hands wide and forming a physical barrier between the bandit and their lord. Raiko can be seen at upper left riding a dappled horse, a full moon glowing in the dark night sky. A great atmospheric setting in the dark, desolate countryside filled with barely visible autumn grasses. A dramatic image from this legendary tale in the life of the brave Raiko, who triumphs over Kidomaru, cutting off his head.
