Fierce Fighting at Pyongyang Displays the Japanese Spirit to the World, 1894

Comments - Interesting scene from the Sino-Japanese War of fighting in close quarters at Pyongyang. In the center, a Japanese soldier simultaneously wrestles a gun from one enemy while turning away a knife in the hand of another man grabbing him around the neck. At right, a soldier lifts a large stone above his head, threatening to dash it down upon a pleading Chinese man. Fighting continues in the distance at left amidst clouds of smoke under slanting raindrops. A fascinating subject, also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
