The Great Battle of Yamazaki, 1865

Comments - Terrific scene from the great Battle of Yamazaki in 1582 in which Toyotomi Hideyoshi defeated Mitsuhide, who had seized power by forcing the great leader Nobunaga to commit suicide. Here the battle rages as two enemies rush toward a samurai at left with weapons drawn. He raises his blade above his head with both hands to defend himself while stepping on the back of a fallen warrior. At right, a horseman spears an opponent through the back as he gallops along, the ground below littered with wounded and dying men, abandoned weapons, and even a drum. Banners and standards flutter above the melee, with smoke rising against the night sky. A great Yoshitoshi depiction of this historic battle, with fine detail and lively color. A fine choice for a collector interested in the samurai tradition.
