Courtesans in the Yoshiwara

Comments - Terrific view of courtesans in a teahouse in the Yoshiwara District. At right, a beauty looks up from writing a poem slip as a woman in the center shows off an exquisite red kimono featuring a rooster with long tail feathers. At left a young girl carries a letter to deliver to one of the women, as another beauty talks to her while leaning against a wooden pillar. In a room beyond at left, a vendor shows bolts of cloth to a beauty, while at upper right, women enjoy a stroll along the verandah surrounding a courtyard garden with a blossoming cherry tree and stone lantern. Wonderful detail in the elegant clothing and setting, with embossing in the white collars and a beautiful burnished checked pattern in the black kimono at far right.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)
