Confrontation at a Waterfall, 1865

Comments - Interesting scene of a confrontation taking place in front of a waterfall. At left, a nobleman grabs the end of a red banner patterned with clouds. The other end is held by the rogue at right, who struggles to pull it back. In the center, a beauty tangled in the banner falls backwards onto the ground as a religious pilgrim also takes hold of the cloth. He wears a black and white print kimono hanging open at the chest to reveal rope bound around his torso. In his outstretched hand, he holds a mirror. The water behind them falls straight down, providing a dramatic backdrop for the argument. Nice expressive figures with fine detail in the hair.

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 29"
