Rival Brothers, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Handsome scene from the kabuki play known as "Honcho Nijushiko," about two rival brothers fighting over the books of secret strategy left by their father, the great warrior Yamamoto Kansuke, who is now dead. Here, the two men face off on a verandah, the man in the center holding a valuable scroll in his hand. He frowns solemnly at his brother at right, who grips a banner in one hand as he strikes a dramatic pose, his other hand thrown up in the air. He wears one sandal, but his other foot is bare. Their elderly mother watches with a frown at left, unhappy with their behavior. A blossoming plum tree blanketed with snow frames a dark winter sky behind a rustic verandah.
