Shinobu Visiting Her Sister, 1853

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from a tale about two sisters who are reunited to avenge the death of their father. Here, the young woman Shinobu has traveled to Edo from her country home in search of her long-lost sister, who has become the beautiful courtesan Miyagino. After arriving at the Daikoku-ya brothel, Shinobu reacts with delight after meeting her sister. She kneels on the floor, smiling happily and throwing her hands out as she looks back at one of the servants. The room is beautifully detailed with folded robes stacked above a chest of drawers at left, and a kimono patterned with vines draped over a black lacquer stand at right. Nakayama Tomijuro II appears as Shinobu. A nicely colored design.
