Stopping a Suicide, 1860

Comments - Intriguing scene from the kabuki play commonly known as "Sannin Kichisa," a complex drama about the evil that occurs following the theft of 100 ryo (gold pieces). It involves three men named Kichisa who are unrelated but become blood brothers after the crime. Here, Obo Kichisa and Ojo Kichisa have decided to commit suicide to atone for their crimes, which include murder. The young Ojo, who has disguised himself as a woman, sits on a cushion with his hands clasped in prayer as Obo prepares to behead him. At that moment, the priest Osho rushes in at left, with a bundle containing two severed heads, which he will show to the police as Obo and Ojo's, leaving them free to escape. He waves his hand excitedly as he gestures for them to stop. The scene takes place inside a temple, with a design of lotus blossoms and leaves rising up out of the water along the back wall. From left, Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Osho Kichisa, Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Obo Kichisa and Iwai Kumesaburo III as Ojo Kichisa. Beautiful color and detail in this interesting subject.
