Warrior Kumagai Naozane and His Wife, 1854

Comments - Handsome kabuki double portrait of Nakamura Fukusuke I as Kumagai Naozane and Nakamura Tomijuro II as his wife, Sagami, in the play "Kumagai Jin'ya." In the play, the warrior Kumagai Jiro Naozane honorably sacrifices his own son Kojiro rather than kill an illegitimate son of the emperor. Here, he looks down at his wife with a sorrowful expression, his lips tightly pressed together in a frown, grieving for the loss of his child. She looks up at him knowingly as she kneels before him, wearing a red kimono patterned with blossoms. Kumagai wears a black kamishimo with a bold design of a dragon and swirling clouds over a navy and gray brocade obi. Includes faint cloth embossing in the drapery framing the scene overhead. A poignant image with fine detail and beautiful color.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 5/8" x 10 1/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. A couple small holes near top edge repaired from reverse. A few faint creases, mostly at edges. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
