Five Beauties as Street Knights, 1858

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene depicting five beauties in the traditionally male role of otokodate or street knights. Each wears a kimono trimmed with a checked pattern and tied with a red and black obi, the robes bordered with a variety of designs, including clouds and lightening bolts, bats in flight, girds, blossoms, and butterflies and spider webs. They smile happily as they exchange glances, posing in front of a building with striped drapery and red paper lanterns hanging from the eaves. Each is armed with a single sword and a shakuhachi flute. An intriguing variation on this classic subject, nicely detailed and colored.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14" x 29 1/4" + margins as shown

Condition - This triptych with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. A few small holes repaired from reverse. Soiling, slight rubbing near edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
