Original Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) Japanese Woodblock Print
Goyu

Series; Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road (Gyosho Tokaido), 1841 - 1844

Hiroshige's Gyosho Tokaido - After the incredible success of Hiroshige's original Hoeido or Great Tokaido in the 1830s, the artist designed several other series illustrating life along the Tokaido road. Named after the style in which the series title is written, the Gyosho Tokaido was published around 1841 - 1844. It features lively scenes focusing on the activities of travelers, winding through a rocky valley or climbing a steep mountain, pausing for a rest or stopping in a busy village or port. These charming designs are attractively colored and most feature fine bokashi shading. A nice complement to the more commonly seen Great Tokaido.

Goyu - Handsome view of travelers stopping at Goyu during their journey along the Tokaido Road. At left, a man relaxes on a bench at a tea stand, while a man approaches carrying a yoke over his shoulder with two large boxes attached to it. A woman with a baby tucked under her kimono and another man cross a wooden bridge over the river at right. Large trees dominate the landscape, with a stone marker beneath them, and the river curving around into the distance. This is the first version of this station, by the original publisher Tatsuzo; the blocks were redrawn for later edition by a different publisher.
