From a series of aizuri-e courtesans
Nanahito of the Sugata-Ebiya, Kamuro Tsuruji and Kameji, circa 1831 - Lovely portrait of the courtesan Nanahito of the Sugata-Ebiya from a series of aizuri-e beauties, printed primarily in tones of blue. She is accompanied by her two young kamuro or child apprentices, Tsuruji and Kameji, as she strolls through the Yoshiwara beneath a blossoming cherry tree. She wears a dark outer kimono patterned with peonies and butterflies, trimmed with a geometric print and tied with a lighter blue obi featuring crane medallions. Her hair is pulled back into a smooth bun, adorned with two large combs, many decorative hairpins, and a ribbon. The sky is shaded in black, and the lips of the figures are touched with red, the only colors used beside a lovely range of blues. A rare and beautiful aizuri-e design, also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
