Original Kunisada II (1823 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
Couple at a Sake Display, 1865

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a couple in front of a display of sake casks. Marked with brand names, the straw-wrapped barrels are tied with ropes and stacked high, providing an unusual backdrop for the pair. Kawarazaki Kunitaro plays the geisha Okuni, who looks up with a coy smile, holding a decorative battledore called a hagoita used for a game similar to badminton. Ichikawa Sadanji appears as Kudari Sadayoshi, scratching his head in a puzzled manner. He wears a brown kimono over a red and white plaid under robe, a folding fan in his hand. A handsome design.

Artist - Kunisada II (1823 - 1880)

Image Size - 9 1/2" x 14 1/8" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail. A couple small holes and losses repaired at edges. Slightly toned. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
