Comments - Terrific kabuki scene from the play commonly known as "Godairiki," which tells the story of the warrior Satsuma Gengobei, who falls in love with the geisha Koman. The evil samurai Sasano Sangobei tricks Koman into writing a letter to Gengobei severing their relationship, which later results in tragedy. In this scene, Gengobei sits at right, staring up at his sweetheart with a suspicious frown as he holds a folding fan. The beauty waves her kimono sleeve above her head, smiling happily. The fellow sitting at left scratches his head in a puzzled manner as he drinks a cup of sake. A servant waits outside the door holding a paper lantern and a kettle. From left, the actors are Otani Tokuji II as Yanushi Tokuemon, Nakamura Tsuruzo I as Mawashi Yasuke, Iwai Kumesaburo III as the Geisha Koman, and Kataoka Gado II as Satsuma Gengobei. Wonderful detail interior and household furnishings, including a tray holding a large fish and an octopus that appears to be draped over a black lacquer sword stand. A great image from this popular play, also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
