The Koya Jewel River in Kii Province

The Six Jewel-like Faces of Actors, circa 1832 - 1833

The Koya Jewel River in Kii Province - Great kabuki portrait of an actor in front of a landscape of the Koya Jewel River in Kii Province. He wears a black kimono with a white pattern, tied with a blue obi, and tall wooden geta sandals. He grins happily as he looks back over his shoulder, an elegant tobacco pouch in one hand and a pipe in the other, the breeze blowing the towel draped over his shoulder. The aizuri-e view above, done only in shades of blue, shows a traveler pausing along the edge of a cliff to view a rushing waterfall along the Koya Jewel River. White clouds drift across the mountainous landscape, with pine trees framing the view. A handsome design from this unusual series. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
