Beauties on a Verandah

Comments - Lovely triptych depicting three beauties on a verandah looking out over the water. The woman at right holds a shamisen plectrum or pick, the black lacquer case for the instrument on the floor beside her. She smiles at her companion in the center, who looks up from a cup of sake. Large lacquer trays set on the tatami mats hold bowls and dishes of food, and a blue and white ceramic basin rests next to a sake kettle. The location offers a wonderful view of the ocean beyond, with many ships dotting the horizon and clouds drifting across the sky. A walled courtyard below includes stone lanterns and a red torii gate leading to a shrine at right. A beautiful design with attractive color and wonderful detail in the setting.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Size - 14 5/8" x 30 5/8"

Condition - This triptych with excellent color and detail. Three separate panels. A few small holes repaired from reverse. Some minor rubbing and soiling at edges. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
