Series; From an untitled series of actors with poems

Actors with Poems - Terrific kabuki print from an untitled series by Toyokuni III dating from 1861 to 1864. Each print features a half-length portrait of a popular actor in an imagined role, accompanied by a poem in a wood grain cartouche. Gengyo Miyagi designed most of the attractive landscape backgrounds. Dating from the last years of his life, these images demonstrate Toyokuni III's skill in creating expressive and finely nuanced portraits. Many feature luxurious printing touches, such as burnishing or embossing. A fine actor series by the artist, and a wonderful choice for the kabuki enthusiast.

Bando Hikosaburo V as Sakingo Yorikane, 1861 - Terrific design of kabuki actor Bando Hikosaburo V in the role of Sakingo Yorikane. The young man wears a sumptuous deep blue kimono patterned with lightly embossed cranes in a circular motif. He holds an ornate pipe, looking over his shoulder suspiciously. Fireworks erupt in the background, releasing a shower of red sparks. A handsome portrait, nicely detailed.

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail. A horizontal crease at center. A couple small holes repaired from reverse. Some light soiling and toning at edges. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
