Matron Cutting off a Beauty's Hair, 1864

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of an elderly matron preparing to cut off a beauty's hair. She wraps the woman's ponytail around her wrist, yanking the poor victim backwards as she raises a sword high above her head with a grimaced expression. Another woman cowers behind her, a horrified expression on her face, while a young samurai holds up a lantern at left. The scene takes place on a wooden walkway overlooking a pond filled with blossoming irises. A fascinating subject with wonderfully expressive figures and an attractive setting.
