Evil Nobleman and Retainer, 1850

Comments - Terrific kabuki double portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro IV as the evil Lord Shihei and Ichikawa Danjuro IV as his retainer Matsuomaru in the classic play "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami." Here, the raging Shihei grimaces angrily as he stands atop a carriage, waving a staff of office above his head. He wears a yellow brocade tunic with a dragon in a circular medallion on the chest, and an ornate headdress topped with sacred jewels and trimmed with beaded fringe. The stern Matsuomaru stands below, his arms firmly folded across his chest as he vows to protect his lord. He wears a red kimono patterned with his namesake pines (matsu), his flared wig and unusual hair atop his head adding to his imposing appearance. A great design with expressive figure and wonderful detail.
