Sawamura Tanosuke III as Wakanahime, 1862

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Sawamura Tanosuke III as Princess Wakana, a beauty who vows revenge on the clan that murdered her family. She learns the art of spider magic, eventually conjuring up an enormous spider to help her avenge her relatives. Here, she looks up with a smile as she unrolls a long scroll filled with magic spells. She wears a blue kimono patterned with spider webs in which butterflies and dragonflies have been trapped, over a red under robe tied with a darker blue obi. Her long hair flows loosely over her shoulders. The background is filled with crashing waves, creating a dramatic backdrop for the figure. An intriguing design.
