Reacting with Horror, 1858

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of a group in an interior, with two men and a woman at right reacting with horror at something they are reading. One man stares down at the open book with a grimace of alarm, his eyes wide, while the beauty's mouth is agape. Behind them, a matron takes a teakettle from a brazier, a worried expression on her face as she looks over her shoulder. At left, a seated man gestures to the fellow standing behind him dressed in an informal cotton kimono. A young girl and a beauty sit behind them, the beauty pointing accusingly at the matron. Wonderfully expressive figures with nice interaction between the characters, and a handsomely detailed setting.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 3/8" x 19 7/8"

Condition - This diptych with nice color and detail. Two panels, not attached at the seams. Some small holes along edges, some repaired from reverse. Minor wrinkling. See photos. Nice overall.
