Young Man Attempting to Commit Suicide, 1851

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of an elderly woman trying to prevent a young man from committing suicide. The youth grasps a sword in his hand, baring his chest as the old woman thrusts her hand out before him, her other hand holding back his wrist. At right, a nobleman watches with a stern frown, a long letter stretched out between his hands. The beauty sitting behind him smiles awkwardly, holding a sword upright against her shoulder. The elegant room features a large black chest, and lacquer boxes on a shelf at left above sliding panels patterned with autumn grasses and blossoms. The left panel includes Iwai Kumesaburo III as Jiro Kanja and Morita Kan'ya XI as Saga no Koshitsu. The right panel includes Bando Hikosaburo IV as Higashiyama Yoshimasa ko and Bando Tamasaburo II (?) as Koshimoto Tamanae. Nicely detailed.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 19 1/8"

Condition - This diptych with nice color and detail. Two panels, not attached at the seams. Light creasing. Some rubbing in right panel. See photos. Good overall.
