Series; The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaido, 1852
Narai: Onoe Tamizo II - Terrific image from Toyokuni III's only Kisokaido series, featuring bust-length actor portraits in front of landscapes of the various stations. Here, the actor Onoe Tamizo II carries a robe over his shoulders, a sober expression on his face. He wears a plaid kimono trimmed with black over a beautifully detailed red robe with a portrait of a deity on the sleeve. At upper left, a torii gate draped with sacred shimenawa ropes is surrounded by trees, with mountains looming in the distance. A fine kabuki portrait with soft shading in the background.
