Series; A Mirror of Past and Present Examples of Loyalty and Filial Piety

Nakamura Utaemon IV, 1848 - Terrific kabuki portrait of Nakamura Utaemon IV from a series presenting actors reflected in oval mirrors with black lacquer frames. He stares over his shoulder with an expression of suffering and worry, his brows furrowed. His long hair is combed smoothly back over his shoulders, and he has a beard and mustached. His dark blue kimono is patterned with blossoms and delicate scrolling lines. The mirror is decorated with a butterfly design and draped with colorful pieces of cloth. A great expressive face, beautifully detailed with fine line work in the hair and burnishing the mirror frame.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 9 7/8" x 14"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Some toning at edges. A few light spots and stains. A few small holes and losses repaired from reverse. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
