Taira Kiyomori Haunted by Strange Sights, circa 1844 - 1845

Comments - Fantastic image of the ruthless leader Taira no Kiyomori standing on the verandah of Rokuhara mansion overlooking a garden in winter. In his quest for political power, the brutal Kiyomori killed or crushed any opponents who stood in his way. In his later years, he was haunted by his actions, and began to see the spirits of those he had murdered. Here, the snowy garden has turned into a nightmare with giant skull-shaped mounds of snow and bare trees in the form of menacing skeletons. The grizzled old warrior grips his sword in a vain attempt to vanquish his demons, staring wide-eyed at the sight. At right, a frightened beauty cowers behind her kimono sleeve. A haunting and memorable scene with wonderful detail and soft bokashi shading in the water and sky. An incredible and rarely seen Hiroshige triptych.
