Matron with a Letter, 1851

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a matron kneeling at the side of a young samurai, attempting to secretly hand him a letter. She cowers before him, looking up with a frightened expression as she holds out the message in her hand. The samurai scratched his head in a puzzled manner as he watches the shirabyoshi dancer Katsuragi at left, smiling coyly at a worried man who clutches her arm. A low folding screen at right features a design of bamboo with a spider web and bird in flight. The blue panels lining the back of the room are patterned with large floral medallions. Nice expressive figures.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 19 1/4"

Condition - This diptych with excellent color and detail. Two separate panels. Some light rubbing and soiling at edges. A couple creases. A few small holes repaired from reverse. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
