Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Nobleman Painting, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a beauty visiting with a nobleman who is preparing to paint. He holds a brush in one hand, a low black lacquer table before him set with shallow bowls of pigment, a larger bowl of water, and a container of brushes. He frowns unhappily as he looks up at the woman, who grins back at him, one hand resting alongside a standing screen. The noble's young sword bearer kneels at right holding his weapon upright. At left, a beauty leans forward with an eager smile while the man behind her scowls at a young girl, a folding fan in his hand. The scene takes place on a rocky shore overlooking the ocean, with a boat anchored at left. An attractive subject, nicely detailed.
