Prince Genji and Beauty after a Bath, 1859

Comments - Lovely triptych depicting Prince Genji visiting a beauty at her home. He wipes the back of his neck with a towel as a girl kneels beside him holding a small bowl of water. A woman offers him an elegant tobacco set with an ornate pipe as he waits for the beauty to dress. She has just finished taking a bath, and she uses the sleeve of her blue and white cotton kimono to dry the side of her face. An attendant holds out a lacquer tray with a pink floral kimono folded on it, another robe hanging over a lacquer stand at right. A plum tree blooms in the garden outside, hanging gracefully over a stone basin of water with a dipper laid across it. Beautiful color and detail in the attractive setting and fabrics.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 27 1/8"

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Three panels, not attached at the seams. Stitching holes along one side of each panel from previous folio binding, repaired, blends well. Slight creasing and soiling, very slight rubbing at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
