Eastern Genji: The Wakana Chapter, 1854

Comments - Attractive illustration from the "Wakana" chapter of the famous "Tale of Genji," showing the Third Princess, the wife of Prince Genji, standing in the window of her private quarters at right. Below, three young boys play hand ball in the garden, as the young courtier Kashiwagi and his companion watch. The princess is supposed to stay hidden from view behind the fine reed blinds, but her curious kitten has wandered out onto the verandah and is climbing a wooden pillar. As her attendants watch the cat with surprise, the beauty is visible just long enough for Kashiwagi to see her and fall madly in love. In the center, Genji and another nobleman sit on the verandah, enjoying the blossoming cherry trees. The elegant palace is beautifully detailed with a handsome spring setting. A lovely design from this classic story, detailed with touches of embossing.
