Series; Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido (Sanoki Tokaido)
The Sanoki Tokaido - After the incredible success of his original "Hoeido Tokaido" in the early 1830s, Hiroshige released several other series illustrating life along the famed Tokaido road. He designed this chuban-sized series in the late 1830s, which was published by Sanoki. Each design features a comic poem called a "kyoka," so the series is also referred to as the "Kyoka Tokaido." A great look at travelers making this historic journey in nineteenth-century Japan, featuring striking scenic views and more intimate scenes of life along the Tokaido. This charming series is rarely seen.
