Series; Contest of Famous Places: The Six Jewel Rivers, 1843 - 1847

The Cloth-fulling Jewel River in Settsu Province - Charming scene of two beauties fulling cloth along the shore of the Kinuta Jewel River in Settsu Province, also known as the Cloth-fulling River. Both women hold wooden mallets, used to beat the cloth in a process that entangles the fibers to create a stronger fabric. One woman leans over the fulling block, gesturing with her mallet, her chin resting atop her hand as she looks off into the sky as a flock of geese passes overhead. The narrow river winds it way through the landscape, framed by a tall tree and clusters of grasses. An attractive design from this rarely seen series, also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

Artist - Sadahide (1807 - 1873)

Image Size - 14 7/8" x 10 1/8"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Light spotting and soiling in subject one loss along bottom edge, repaired from reverse. Slight rubbing and toning along top edge. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
