Evening Cool at Azuma, circa 1849 - 1850

Comments - Terrific image of beauties enjoying the evening cool from pleasure boats along the Sumida River in Edo. In the center a beauty leans over the edge of the ship to rinse her cup in the water. Her companion leans forward with an eager smile, fanning herself. A meal is laid out on a tray between them, and a large paper lantern hangs in the center of the boat. At left, a woman stands in the front of a boat, a roll of tissues tucked under her neck as she uses both hands to tie a green brocade obi around her waist. The Ryogoku Bridge can be seen in silhouette at left as fireworks explode overhead, with rays of sparks radiating across the night sky. A lovely, classic beauty triptych illustrating this favorite summer pastime, nicely detailed and shaded.
