Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Teahouse Beauties

Comments - Intriguing image of a row of identically dressed beauties sitting in a teahouse. Each wears a purple kimono bordered with plum blossoms; some hold folding fans while others have their hands folded quietly in their laps. A fine black lacquer tobacco set and a covered teacup on a stand are placed on the floor before each woman. A couple young girls carrying poem slips walk along the carpeted aisle below the seating platform, while two monks kneel and a young acolyte brings in a covered cup. An ornate iron railing runs across the front of the verandah, with colorful red paper lanterns hanging from the eaves beneath the tiled roof. Swirling clouds frame the scene at top and bottom. A fascinating image with lovely color and wonderful detail.
