Saigo Takamori and Rebels, 1878

Comments - Interesting kabuki triptych depicting samurai who took part in the Satsuma Rebellion. In the center, Bando Hikosaburo V portrays the rebel leader Saigo Takamori, a map stretched out between his hands as he consults with his men. He wears a fancy black military uniform decorated with gold braid and fringed epaulets, and a hat topped with white feathers. In the right panel, Iwai Hanshiro VIII appears as a woman warrior, gripping a naginata and wearing an iris pattern kimono, the sleeves tied back with a purple sash. A great image with lively color and expressive faces, detailed with burnishing in the black uniform and embossing in the white feathers.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 13 1/8" x 27 1/2"

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Three panels, not attached at the seams. A few holes, thinning along right edge of center panel, repaired, blends well. Slight soiling, rubbing, and creasing. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
