Battle in the Snow, 1860

Comments - Intriguing scene from the kabuki play commonly known as "Sannin Kichisa," a complex drama about the evil that occurs following the theft of 100 ryo (gold pieces). It involves three men named Kichisa who are unrelated but become blood brothers after the crime. At left, the priest Osho Kichisa kneels atop a man, yanking his wrist backwards. He stares up with an angry grimace. At right, Obo Kichisa sits atop his foe Naganuma Rokuro, his drawn sword in his hand. Rokuro struggles to push Obo off of him, turning his head away from the foot in his face. Snow falls heavily over the night sky, blanketing the rooftops of the city below. The actors include Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Osho Kichisa, Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Obo Kichisa, and Ichikawa Kunigoro as Naganuma Rokuro. Nice expressive figures with fine bokashi shading in the background.
