Thief Disguised as a Woman, 1860

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the play commonly known as "Sannin Kichisa," a complicated drama about the evil that occurs following the theft of 100 ryo (gold pieces). It involves three men named Kichisa who are unrelated but become blood brothers after the crime. At left, the young Ojo Kichisha, who is disguised as a beauty, has just robbed a woman of a purse containing 100 ryo. He grins happily as he looks up, the drawstring bag in his outstretched hand. At right, Obo Kichisa has just arrived by palanquin in time to witness the theft. He demands the money, having recognized the robber as Ojo Kichisa. Obo stares back at the robber as he sits in his palanquin, ready to fight for the money. A tall fence topped with bamboo spikes fills the background beneath the night sky. From left, the actors are Iwai Kumesaburo III and Kawarazaki Gonjuro I. An intriguing subject, nicely detailed with fine bokashi shading in the beauty's kimono and the sky.
