Concert of European Orchestral Music, 1889

Comments - Fascinating illustration of a concert of European music. At right, a woman in a bustled gown plays an ornately decorated piano which features two brackets with lighted candles to illuminate the sheet music. In the center, men and women play a double bass, a cello, violins, and a flute. A chorus of men and women at left hold music sheets in their hands. The room is decorated with a floral patterned carpet, fringed purple draperies, and ornate gas chandeliers, with a balcony overlooking a blossoming cherry tree and a full moon in the night sky. An incredible scene with wonderful detail in the elegant, Western-style clothing and setting, including burnishing in the black suits and touches of metallic pigment in some of the dresses, which has oxidized to a darker tone. A terrific look at Western influences in Japan during the Meiji era.
